William Garland White and Ethel Fanny Gifford
William was born on the 1st of May 1874 at 6 Orchard Place, Portswood, South Stoneham.
William was the son of Henry White and Sarah Stoodley
On the 25th of December 1897 he married Lily Elizabeth Gosling in South Stoneham. Lily, who was born circa. 1874 in South Stoneham and died before 1922, was the daughter of John Gosling (#517) and Louisa Gosling (#518). In the parish register the original entry was changed in the margin as the original entry did not state 'Lily'. They held the wedding reception in the blacksmiths shop. It tended to to be a tradition amongst blacksmiths to marry on Christmas Day as it was one of the few days on which they had a holiday
After Lily died William married Ethel Fanny Gifford on the 11th of November 1922 in
Southampton Register Office. Fanny (as she was known) was born on the 8th of October
1892 at Trimulcherry, Durnford Rd., Bournemouth. She was the daughter of
Joseph Edward Gifford and Lois Green. It is said that Fanny was working as a nanny
to Edward at the time of the marriage. Fanny's name was given as 'Fannie' on the
marriage certificate and they were both married from 380 Old Portiswood.
Fanny died in 1931. William died in February 1959 aged 84.
William's occupation was Blacksmith as was his father's.
