John William Buttery


John William Buttery (#34) and Mary Ann Maude (#47)

John was born 11th April 1863 in Swillington, which was in the registration district of 
Kirkstall. John died 23rd August 1928.

Mary was born on 17th October 1864 at 19 Trent Street, Hunslet. She was the daughter of 
George Thomas Maude (#203) and Martha Brook (#204). Mary died on 28th March 1922 in Leeds 
General Infirmary. Her death certificate records the cause of death as Heart failure 
following shock coupled with fracture of five ribs and shoulder blade accidentally sustained 
by fall downstairs at her own home (18 Cranbrook Avenue). An inquest was held on 30th Mar 1922 
and a verdict of Accidental death was recorded.

John worked as a Shoeing Smith, as did his father before him.

They were married on 30th November 1887, in the parish Church of St. Peter, Hunslet Moor.
Witnesses to their marriage were George Thomas Maude and Ruth Maude. 
The service was performed, after banns, by Lawrence Wilkins, the curate.

John was living at 192 Dewsbury Road, Leeds at the time of their marriage.  This area was 
extensively redeveloped and in 1994 a large stretch of Dewsbury Road (including 192 and 194) 
had playing fields on the site.  
Mary was living at 12 Cambrian Terrace before her marriage.

By 1896, when George Gilbert was born, they had moved next door to John's father and were 
living at 194 Dewsbury Road, Hunslet.  They later moved to 18 Cranbrook Avenue.

     i    William Henry Buttery (#32) born in Hunslet on the 30th of June 1890. 
     ii   Maud Buttery (#122). 
     iii  George Gilbert Buttery (#7) born 13th October 1896. 
     iv   Herbert Vernon Buttery (#31) born in Hunslet on 2nd December 1902. 
     v    Arthur Buttery (#48) born in Hunslet on 28th February 1905.
