Edward Smallwood

Edward Smallwood (#174) and Eliza Wiggin (#175)

Edward was born some around the end of 1818 as his age is shown as 52 on the 1871 census and
he was christened in Deritend & Bordesley on the 24th of January 1819. Edward was the son of
Joseph Smallwood (#454) and Elizabeth Young (#455).
Eliza was born some time after December 1823 as she was classed as a minor in 1844 when they
married. Her age was given as 46 on the 1871 census so that would indicate a birthyear of 1825.
She was the daughter of William Wiggin (#437) and Elizabeth? (#438).

In 1842 Eliza's brother John married Sarah Smallwood.

Edward and Eliza were married on 1st of December 1844 in Saint Philips, Birmingham. They were
both living in Lichfield Street at the time of their marriage. Their wedding was conducted,
after banns, by P.H.Downes, lecturer, and witnessed by Ann Smallwood and Samuel Whitford.

When Edward and Eliza married, Edward's profession was given as British Plate Worker but when
Betsy and Ann were born his occupation was shown as Journeyman Blacksmith.
In the 1871 census his occupation is given as Railwayman Coach Smith.

Betsy's birth certificate shows that they were living at 7 Claverdon Street, Aston when Betsy
and Ann were born. However, the 1871 census shows them living at number 8.
Claverdon Street was in the Ecclesiastical District of St. Anne's and in the Ward of Duddeston
and Nechells.

Edward died between 1871 and February 1888 (when Betsy married).
