George Buttery

George Buttery (#257) and Maria Elam (#258)

George was born in the 1780's in Blyth, Nottinghamshire.  The precise year is a little hazy as
the 1841 census gives his age as 55 (1786), the 1851 census gives his age as 68 (1783) and 
his death certificate gives his age as 70 (1782).

The Parish records of St. Mary's, Swillington show that George married Sarah Osman (#256) on 
24th April 1804.

It would seem that George then had a relative (possibly his mother in law), Dinah, living with 
him, as his common-law wife, until she died aged 63 in 1822. Dinah was buried on 28th June 1822 
at St. Mary's, Swillington.

Shortly afterwards, George and Maria were married on 19th August 1823, at St. Mary's in 
Swillington.  The ceremony was performed, after banns, by the Rev. Woodcock.

Maria was born in early 1794 and was baptised on the 22nd of April 1794 in Whiston, Yorkshire.  

It appears that Maria may have died in childbirth in early April 1835 as she was buried on 
17th April 1835 at St. Mary's, Swillington shortly before their infant daughter, Rebecca, died.

George then married Harriet Wilson (#262) on 28th September 1836, in St. Peter's church, Leeds. 
Their first son George was born in December of that year.

George died the 3rd of August 1852 in Swillington. His death certificate states that he died of 
Inflammation of the Windpipe, Not Certified.  The informant was his son, Henry, who was present 
at his death and the registrar was William Green.

He was buried on 5th August 1852 at St. Mary's church in Swillington, Leeds (W.Riding). He was 
buried by a temporary vicar and his name was entered in the Parish Register as Buttrey which was
 later amended by the incumbent, the Rev. Thomas Woodcock.

George's occupation was given as Butcher on his death certificate.

George's children by Maria Elam:
     i    George Buttery (#261) was baptised on 6th June 1824 in Swillington.
     ii   Mary Ann Buttery (#259) was baptised on 19th May 1827 in Swillington.
     iii  Eliza Buttery (#260) was baptised on 21st December 1829 in Swillington.
     iv   Henry Buttery (#269) was born circa 2nd August 1833 in Swillington.
     v    Rebecca Buttery (#351) was born circa April 1835 and died as an infant. She was buried 
          on 18th April 1835 in Swillington.

George's children by Harriet Wilson:
     vi   George Buttery (#353) was born circa December 1836. George died aged 10 and
          was buried on 12th April 1847 in Swillington by John Bell who was the vicar of 
          Rothwell. 
     vii  John Buttery (#263) was born circa September 1837, baptised on 17th September 1837 
          in Swillington. John died aged 17 months and was buried on 10th February 1839 in 
          Swillington.
     viii Elizabeth Victoria Buttery (#352) was baptised on 21st July 1839 in Swillington. 
          Elizabeth died aged 9 and was buried on 31st January 1849 in Swillington.
